New Year, New Habits: How the Co-op Supports Your Wellness Goals

Are you looking to kick off the year with healthier habits while supporting your community? The Fredericksburg Food Co-op is here to help you achieve your wellness goals while embracing local, sustainable living. From fresh, organic produce to exciting community events, we’re here to support you every step of the way.

The Co-op Difference

At the Fredericksburg Food Co-op, we do things differently. Our mission is to provide the community with access to healthy, locally-sourced, and sustainable products. Whether you’re striving to eat better, cook more meals at home, or reduce your environmental impact, the Co-op is your partner in wellness.

We’re not just a grocery store; we’re a community. Our friendly staff is always ready to answer your questions, offer recommendations, and share tips to help you make healthier, more intentional choices. From organic fruits and vegetables to eco-friendly household products, everything we offer is designed to support your journey.

Products for Healthier Living

Healthy living starts with what’s on your plate, and the Co-op has plenty to offer:

  • Fresh Produce: Our shelves are stocked with a variety of organic, seasonal fruits and vegetables to nourish your body. Whether you’re making smoothies, hearty soups, or fresh salads, you’ll find high-quality ingredients here, many of which are locally sourced.
  • Whole Foods and Pantry Staples: Dive into our bulk section, where you’ll find grains, legumes, nuts, seeds and even seasonings. Buying in bulk allows you to purchase just what you need while reducing packaging waste. Bring your own jar or bag, or borrow one from us!
  • Plant-Based and Specialty Diets: Whether you’re exploring plant-based eating or managing food sensitivities, we have options for everyone. Check out our selection of vegan proteins, gluten-free flours, and dairy-free alternatives.
  • Humanely-Raised Meats: For those who enjoy meat as part of their diet, we offer a selection of humanely-raised, grass-fed, and pasture-raised meats. These options are not only better for the environment but also ensure the highest quality and ethical standards.
  • Snack Smarter: Who says healthy snacks can’t be delicious? From fairtrade chocolates and dried fruits to low-sugar energy bars, we have wholesome snacks to fuel your day.

Community Resources and Events

Your journey to wellness doesn’t have to be a solo endeavor. At the Co-op, we’re all about community and connection:

  • Workshops and Events: Keep an eye on our calendar for events like live music, book groups, and fitness classes. These gatherings are a great way to learn new skills, meet like-minded neighbors, and stay motivated.
  • Programs for Accessibility: We’re proud to offer initiatives like Carrot Cash, which provides 20% cashback to customers using SNAP/EBT. We also partner with Virginia Fresh Match, offering 50% off on fresh and frozen produce for customers using SNAP/EBT. Healthy food should be accessible to everyone, and we’re committed to making that a reality.
  • Membership Perks: Join the Co-op as a member-owner and enjoy benefits like discounts, voting rights, and the opportunity to help shape our future.

Tips for Staying on Track

Making changes can feel overwhelming, but small steps can lead to big results. Here are a few tips to stay consistent:

  1. Meal Prep: Set aside time each week to plan and prepare your meals. Use fresh produce and pantry staples from the Co-op to make it easy and affordable.
  2. Shop with a List: Avoid impulse buys by planning your grocery trips. Focus on whole, nutrient-rich foods that align with your goals. Using the Co+op Deals website or app can help you create a list of sales items with ease.
  3. Incorporate Plant-Based Meals: Try adding one or two plant-based meals to your weekly menu. It’s a simple way to boost your nutrition and reduce your environmental footprint. Check out some of our favorite recipes like Warm Winter Salad with Roasted Vegetable and Maple-Dijon Dressing or Cozy Autumn Harvest Soup to help you get started.
  4. Visit the Co-op Regularly: Make the Co-op a part of your routine. Weekly visits will help you stay stocked up on fresh, healthy ingredients. Don’t forget to visit us on Wellness Wednesday, the first Wednesday of every month where all items in the wellness section are 10% off (excluding sales items). Our wellness section is home to a large selection of natural items including homeopathic medicines and supplements, skincare, and refrigerated probiotics.
