Fresh-as-Spring Strawberry Basil Flatbread (with Goat Cheese & Local Honey)

Spring has officially sprung in Fredericksburg, and that means it’s time to celebrate all the vibrant, fresh flavors our region has to offer. One of our absolute favorite combos this time of year? Juicy local strawberries, fragrant basil, and a drizzle of sweet Virginia honey.

This easy flatbread recipe makes the most of those seasonal goodies — and it’s perfect for everything from picnic snacks to brunch with friends. You can make it in under 20 minutes, and it’s as pretty as it is tasty. Let’s get into it!

Ingredients:

  • 1 store-bought or homemade flatbread (naan or lavash works great!)

  • 1/2 cup goat cheese (softened)

  • 1 tsp olive oil

  • 1 cup fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced

  • A handful of fresh basil leaves, torn

  • 1–2 tsp local honey (we love Battlefield Honey!)

  • Cracked black pepper to taste

  • Optional: Balsamic glaze for drizzling

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F. If your flatbread needs crisping, place it on a baking sheet and warm for about 5 minutes until lightly golden.

  2. Spread softened goat cheese evenly over the warm flatbread. A drizzle of olive oil over the cheese helps everything melt together beautifully.

  3. Top with sliced strawberries and sprinkle with fresh basil. Add a few cracks of black pepper to bring out the sweetness of the berries.

  4. Drizzle with honey and (optional) a bit of balsamic glaze for that sweet-tangy magic.

  5. Slice & serve! It’s delicious warm or at room temperature — perfect for picnics, potlucks, or patio lunches.

Co-op Tips:

  • Look for fresh-picked strawberries in the Co-op produce section — they’re in season now and bursting with flavor!

  • Support local makers by choosing Virginia-made goat cheese and honey — check our fridge and local products section.

  • Want a vegan version? Swap goat cheese for a dairy-free spread and use agave instead of honey.
