Co-op Statement on SNAP Benefits during Government Shutdown
As a retailer with a commitment to serving our community we have been following the potential crisis in SNAP/EBT funding due to the shutdown of the Federal Government.
Today, two federal judges have ruled that the current administration must use emergency funds to at least partially cover food stamp benefits.
Prior to today’s ruling, a State of Emergency was declared in Virginia, and Governor Youngkin announced the formation of the VENA program.
Current SNAP recipients (as of 10/29/2025) will receive a weekly comparable state-supported emergency food assistance payment based upon existing eligibility for the SNAP program. VENA benefits will be issued via the existing electronic benefit transfer (EBT) card that SNAP recipients currently hold.
We will continue to offer the programs we currently provide, ensuring low-cost fresh and frozen produce to customers using the VENA program.
Anticipating increased demand during the government shutdown, we are working closely with local agencies to ensure that we can provide optimal assistance at this time.
We have pledged a $5,000 food donation to Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank, along with personnel to assist at this critical time.
We are continuing to closely monitor this situation and endeavor to ensure that we can serve our community effectively and in a timely manner.
